Being a great coach is no longer enough on its own.

I want to be careful about how I say that, because it's not a criticism of coaching itself. Great coaching still matters enormously. But in 2026, great coaching is the starting point, the baseline expectation, not the differentiator it once was.

What the coaches who grow will also do

They'll know how to build trust deliberately rather than hoping it happens organically. They'll know how to communicate their value clearly, in language a potential client actually understands, rather than industry jargon.

They'll use AI intelligently, as a tool that removes friction, rather than either ignoring it entirely or leaning on it in ways that undermine the human core of their work.

They'll create measurable outcomes their clients and, where relevant, their clients' employers can actually see. They'll stay visible without burning themselves out trying to keep up with content demands. They'll manage clients professionally, with real systems rather than improvisation. And they'll make themselves genuinely easy to work with, from the first inquiry through the entire engagement.

Why we wrote this down

That's the thinking behind our 10 Best Practices for Coaches in 2026, a resource we put together because I kept having some version of this same conversation with coach after coach, and it felt worth writing down properly rather than repeating piecemeal.

Both halves matter now, and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.
